Ingredients to make Creamy Dill Dip
- Sour Cream – for creaminess and tang.
- Mayonnaise – for smooth flavor and creaminess. The fat helps bind the other ingredients.
- Fresh Dill – if you can find it, fresh dill is the way to go. Dried dill weed ( in the spice section of the supermarket) is a great substitute.
- Parsley Flakes – for herb flavor that compliments the dill.
- Minced Onion Flakes – for depth of flavor and mild onion taste.
- Chives – compliments the dill and parsley without overpowering.
- Cayenne – only a pinch adds a tiny bit of heat.
Mayonnaise and Added Salt
The saltiness of mayonnaise will vary by the brand you use and whether it’s full-fat or light mayonnaise. I find that light mayonnaise tastes saltier than full-fat so if using light mayonnaise, I’ll add less salt to the dip. With this in mind, you might want to hold off on adding any salt until you taste the final dip.
Flavor Variations
One of the best things about this homemade dill dip is it’s totally versatile. While you don’t want to overpower the dill, you can easily make it your own by adding garlic powder or garlic salt, black pepper or fresh herbs instead of the dried variety.
Another idea is to substitute plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream for loads of tang. Softened cream cheese can easily take the place of the mayonnaise. The dip will firm up a little in the fridge, but tastes so creamy and delicious.
How To Make Easy Creamy Dill Dip
Start by whisking the mayonnaise and sour cream in a medium bowl. We love a mini-whisk for this. Add the dry ingredients and stir until everything is well combined.
